Lagos, Portugal
Lagos is one of those places that gives you a little bit of everything if you let yourself move slowly.
Cliff paths, wild beaches, good coffee, old streets, local markets, bookshops, vintage finds and enough quiet corners to make the Algarve feel less like a holiday destination and more like somewhere you can properly exhale.
This is a Listen guide to Lagos, built around coffee, walking, culture, third spaces and the kind of places that make a city feel easier to know.

Sunrays Kitchen - A good breakfast or brunch stop before heading out for the day. Start here if you want something easy, bright and filling before a walk or beach day.
Best for: breakfast, brunch, slow mornings
Coffee & Waves - A speciality coffee and surf culture spot in the old town.
This is one for the coffee people. Go here for espresso, filter coffee, hand brews and a slower drink before heading towards the beach or wandering through town.
Best for: speciality coffee, surf culture, coffee before a walk
KOYO Brew Lab - A coffee stop for people who care about the details.
KOYO Brew Lab brings a more intentional coffee experience into the Lagos guide. Go here when you want to slow down with a proper cup, ask questions and sit with coffee as something crafted rather than rushed.
Best for: speciality coffee, slow mornings, coffee people
Order: ask what they are brewing that day
Listen note: A good place for when coffee is the ritual, not just the fuel.
Mar d’Estórias - Part café, part shop, part cultural stop. Mar d’Estórias is a good place to pause, browse and take in something a little more considered.
It works well later in the day when you want coffee, food, gifts or somewhere beautiful to sit.
Best for: browsing, lunch, coffee, gifts, design
Listen note: A good third space for when you want to sit, look around and stay a little longer.
Trails and green spaces:
Porto de Mós via Cliff Paths (6.3mi est 2hr45) - this trail starts in Lagos, pick up a coffee and talk a walk along the stunning cliff paths giving you views of the Atlantic Ocean
Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse - Canavial Beach (4.4mi est 2hr 20) - Begin at the famous Camilo Beach before hiking up to Ponta da Piedade, there is a boardwalk if you prefer level ground however there are many options to go off trail and I would highly recommend exploring!
Barão de São João e Mata Nacional de Barão de São João (4.5mi est 2hr) - This is a local trail taking you into the beautiful National Park. You will find yourself walking amongst the trees, experiencing local flora and fauna. Cultural stops
Cultural Stops
Mercado de Escravos - A small but important museum in the historic centre of Lagos.
The site addresses Lagos’ connection to the fifteenth century slave trade and Portugal’s colonial history. Although we feel this space could do more to take accountability, there is an acknowledgement of the role this city played.
Best for: history, reflection, understanding the city beyond the postcard
Listen note: A necessary stop if we are talking honestly about place, memory and belonging.
Forte da Ponta da Bandeira - A seventeenth century fortress by the harbour, close to the old town and the water.
Best for: views, history, a short cultural stop
Listen note: Go here before or after walking towards the beaches.
Mercado Municipal de Lagos - The local market is a good morning stop for produce, fish and a more everyday view of the city.
Best for: mornings, local food, people watching
Listen note: A good place to remember that cities are lived in, not just visited.
The Owl Story Book Store - A bookshop belongs in any Listen city guide.
The Owl Story Book Store is a good cultural stop for a slower wander through Lagos. Go when you want to browse, pick up something to read by the water or build a little quiet into the day. It’s perfect to stop by after KOYO
Best for: book browsing, slow afternoons, solo wandering
Listen note: A good bookshop gives you another way into a city. It lets you see what people are reading, gifting and returning to.
Shops and markets
The Urban Jungle - A vintage shop in Lagos for small treasures, objects and pieces with a bit of life already in them.
Best for: vintage finds, slow browsing, objects with character
Good to know: check opening times before going, as small independent shops can shift their hours
Listen note: A good city guide needs somewhere to browse without rushing. The Urban Jungle adds that feeling of discovery.
A slow Saturday in Lagos
Start at the Saturday farmers market by the station.
Bring a tote, pick up fruit or flowers, and let this be the first part of the day before the town gets too busy.
Walk into the old town for coffee at KOYO Brew Lab or Coffee & Waves.
Browse The Owl Story Book Store and take your time choosing something to read by the water.
Visit Mercado de Escravos if you want to better understand Lagos beyond the postcard version.
Continue towards Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, then walk out towards Ponta da Piedade.
Later, stop by The Urban Jungle for a slow browse.
End at Mar d’Estórias for food, coffee, a drink or one last look around.
A greener day
Start with breakfast at Sunrays Kitchen.
Head out to Barão de São João e Mata Nacional.
Take a long walk through the trees.
Return to Lagos for coffee or food.
Keep the evening simple.
Pair with
A notebook
A book you can read slowly
A swimsuit
Comfortable shoes
A small tote for market finds
Time away from your phone
Listen note
Lagos is easy to consume quickly because it is so beautiful on the surface. But the better version of the city comes when you slow down.
Drink the coffee. Walk the cliffs. Learn the history. Browse the bookshop. Go to the market. Sit by the water. Let the place be more than a view.
